Overview
Add screens before the paywall that ask about the person, show what the product will do for them, and use the answers straight away. Three companies report more people starting or paying after making onboarding longer, not shorter.
People decide whether to pay before they have used the product, so the screens before the paywall are where they decide whether it is for them. Sesame’s longer intake gave people “increasing confidence” the care was comprehensive (Ravi Mehta); Zumba says its questions showed users “we’re listening to them” (Zumba).
Fits when
- Subscription apps that can use the answers straight away: a recommended plan, programme or first lesson
- Purchases where trust is the barrier, like health or money, and the questions show the product is serious (Sesame)
- Apps where the store takes payment, so login can wait until after the paywall (Coconote)

Good to knowFit and evidence notes
- Fit to consider
- Products whose value moment needs speed (a first match, a first message) where Ravi Mehta argues for cutting steps (Tinder)
- About the evidence
- Each company changed several things at once (length with personalisation, social proof or a paywall move) so length alone is not isolated.
Copy includes 2 more limitations, 3 failure modes, the full evidence, and adaptation guidance.
