Overview
Offer an opt-in stake of earned in-app currency on keeping a streak going. Build in a freeze before a missed day, a repair after, and a pause for planned breaks so one lapse need not end the commitment.
Incentives for healthy behaviour work strongly while they run and often vanish when they stop, and making a practice a habit is hard; the products that keep streaks running pair them with ways to survive a missed day (Patel et al.; Royer, Stehr and Sydnor; Duolingo; Apple).
Fits when
- Apps that already have a daily streak or a recorded daily action
- An opt-in stake offered right after a reward or milestone, not by default
- Forgiveness people can see before they need it: a freeze in hand, a pause for planned breaks

Good to knowFit and evidence notes
- Fit to consider
- Needs automatic, reliable recording of each day's action, so a loss never follows a day the app failed to record.
- Also consider
- Avoid real money: forfeits raise refund, payment and dispute questions, and staking purchasable currency may count as wagering under store or local rules.
- About the evidence
- Duolingo’s 2017 wager result is company-reported without sample, baseline or test window; the current forgiveness features are documented without measured effects.
